Abstrakt: -The substation computer-based equipment must meet the operating requirements which can be classified into two major categories: the fonctional requirements and the operational constraints.•The functions to be provided-in a substation are essentially as follows:••the remote operation functions, such as data acquisition, preprocessing of the date, management of exchanges with the Central Operations Station, etc..••the local functions, such as chronological recording of events and the automatic systems for operation and resumption of service.•The operational constraints are quite numerous. From among the major ones, let us mention:••the qualitative and quantitative evolution,••the dependability,••the availability.-In order to meet these requirements and constraints, CGEE ALSTHOM has designed and produced the EPC 3.000 system which is basically characterized by an overall architecture implementing:•a programmed logic centered around a minior micro-computer, capable of displaying a certain “intelligence” and endowed with storage capabilities.•a tri-level structure making it possible to desynchronize the various system components and to prptect the programmed logic against the numerous types of interference found in a substation.•a highly safe dialogue between the programmed logic and the I/O peripherals.-A few examples of existing applications are given to illustrate the possibilities afforded by such computer-based equipment.
