Abstrakt: The clinical effects of endotoxaemia were investigated in the pregnant pig, particularly with regard to the occurrence of abortion. Ten gilts were given varying doses of crude E. coliendotoxin (14.4mg/ml) intravenously at 68 to 77 days' gestation. The lowest dose (2.5 ml) caused transient fever and a variety of other clinical signs but these gilts did not abort. As dosage was increased, clinical signs became more severe and abortions occurred in one of three gilts given 5 ml and in all of five gilts given 10 or 20 ml endotoxin. The average interval from injection to abortion was 40 h. A few of the aborted foetuses were expelled alive but most were recently dead and showed early signs of autolysis. When gilts did not abort no abnormalities were detected in their piglets at term. It is suggested that by provoking synthesis of prostaglandin in the endometrium the endotoxin causes luteolysis and thereby precipitates abortion.
