This paper is concerned with the model validation and the determination of the dynamic time constants of a solar collector having fluid as the heat transport medium. The approach taken is to model the dynamic behavior of a solar collector by a One Temperature Plug Flow (OTPF) model or a Two Temperature Plug Flow (TTPF) model which are represented by bilinear partial differential equations that determines the temperature profile Tf(x, t) of the collector fluid as a function of time t and distance x along the collector. The parameters of these models are estimated by measuring the collectors temperature response, at different spatial locations, and under a variety of experimental conditions. The preliminary experimental validation shows that some of the assumptions used in deriving the OTPF model do not hold and therefore it must be modified to guarantee that this model predicts the fast temperature dynamics of the solar collector. All the experimental data was taken from an operating solar system installed on Solar House III at Colorado State University |
