Recent Technological Developments for the Visually Impaired: State of the Art

Abstrakt: The development of electronic aids for the visually impaired is aimed at meeting the various needs of visually impaired individuals in business and educational settings. To this end, engineers are applying research findings in the areas of synthesized speech, computer science, and electronics to develop talking calculators, speech and tactile-output reading machines, and braille and “talking” computer terminals. The need for evaluation of equipment and instructional programs is discussed.
