The classification of rehabilitation equipment as educational media is discussed. Rehabilitation equipment is reclassified into three types: rehabilitative, assistive, and adaptive. The three types are related to the functional purpose of the equipment in the educational rehabilitative process. One grouping of equipment has implicit educational uses; i.e., equipment is implicit to an educational process, or requires education to support its use. A second grouping includes explicit uses, where the equipment is central to the educational process. Technical and social mediating factors are shown not to be classifiers, but rather are influences on the application of equipment and media. A typology for classifying equipment as media in a decision-tree format is presented. |
