Until 1974 Petru Popescu was a successful young writer living in Bucharest, where his novels, short stories and books of poems continued to be published, despite the never-ending wrangles with the censor. That year he was allowed to go abroad and, after a spell as Writer in Residence at Iowa University and travels in the United States and Europe, made his home in England. With his American wife he now lives in London, where he teaches comparative literature and pursues his writing career. In an interview for Index on Censorship he discusses with George Theiner the reasons that led him to emigrate and a variety of other topics ranging from the different roles assigned to the writer in Eastern and Western Europe to the problems of writers in exile. |
