In 1988, an aids-information bus, located in the centre of Oslo, was established to provide free syringes to injecting drug users on an anonymous basis. In 1992, a survey among 308 persons visiting the aids-information bus was conducted. The gender proportion was 38 % women, 62 % men and mean age was 29 years. About 80 % stated that they had started using syringes under the age of 20; 94 % was hiv-tested at least once. Although syringes are easily available in Oslo, up to 45 % stated that they had shared syringes during the previous 12 months. This fact raises the question: To what extent is the sharing of syringes related to the availability? About 50 % reported having had sex without condom the week prior to the survey. The article discusses the concept of risk-behaviour in relation to hiv-prevention. Since the prevalence and incidence of hiv is low among injecting drug users in Oslo, it is suggested that drug users make strategic choices regarding with whom they share syringes or have intercourse, when not using the condom. |
