Abstrakt: 76 male and 91 female undergraduates rated the attractiveness and personality characteristics of an actor in a taped conversation. In one condition the actor boasted throughout and then apologized for boasting at the end of the conversation. In a second condition the actor boasted but did not apologize for his behavior. In the third condition the actor did not boast. The credibility (high or low) of boasting was varied in each condition. Results indicated that boasting in all cases was seen as unattractive; that credibility was more salient for attractiveness in business-type, as opposed to social-type, roles; and that self-apology to some degree compensated for unattractive boasting behavior. Implications of these findings were discussed.
