Abstrakt: An ego-building approach to the treatment of psychopaths is based on the hypothesis that an overly narrow view of “superego” contributes to the despair of therapists in treating psychopaths. That is, when specified modifications in the concepts of “ego” and “superego” are made, treatment modalities emerge which may make psychopaths “treatable.” The term “psychopath” is used only to help place the discussion of these issues in an historical context. An example illustrating the principles involved in this treatment approach is provided.
