This paper presents the application of nonlinear model predictive control to the thermal control of a batch or semi-batch chemical reactor fitted with an alternative-fluid heating-cooling system (i.e. different fluids at a constant temperature can be delivered alternatively to the jacket). The strategy of the nonlinear control system is based on an open-loop constrained optimisation problem which is solved repeatedly on-line by a sequential optimisation and solution strategy on a PC for a typical temperature sampling rate. Feedback from measurements is used to reduce plant/model mismatch. Results using a rigorous simulator of a typical fed-batch chemical reaction vessel are presented. Two feedback schemes are compared (an output disturbance estimator and a deterministic parameter estimator) showing the limitation of the former and illustrating the advantages of the latter. Potential shortcomings of the proposed approach are pointed out. |
