•A comparison of the effectiveness of liquid thermoclines and packed bed thermoclines.•Derivation of the equations describing the heat transfer processes in a packed bed including presentation of an effective diffusivity explicitly written as a function of the packed bed parameters.•Indication that a liquid thermocline can be thought of and modelled in an analogous manner to a packed bed.•Observation that diffusivity whether it be effective diffusivity of a packed bed or diffusivity of a liquid is a good metric for simple comparative evaluation of performance.•Evaluation of the exergy loss of both of thermocline thermal stores as a result of thermal front smearing during an example duty cycle.•Calculations which demonstrate the existance of an optimum sphere size and aspect ratio for a packed bed thermal store.•Presentation of a twin variable volume tank concept that has the potential of removing the losses associated with liquid thermocline instability and thermal front diffusion. |
