Abstrakt: Commercial aviation can be protected from the threat of explosives in two ways, either by preventing explosives from reaching the aircraft or by mitigating the effects of an explosive by protecting the aircraft from an onboard explosion. The containment units under study aim at acting as complementary and passive security measures for passengers and cabin crew. The proposed concept is a container where an internal high strength layer made of ballistic textiles is used to stop blast fragments, coupled with an external layer deforming in a controlled way during the explosion, designed to fully contain the blast pressure. The current research builds upon the positive results of such concept from a campaign of blast tests and extending its application by developing solutions for the protection of wide-body aircrafts and addressing the Least Risk Bomb Location (LRBL) directive.
