Co-doped visible light active photocatalysts were obtained by chemical modification of TiO2by carbon, nitrogen and sulphur. The method used for the synthesis employed titanium isopropoxide as precursor and thiourea as dopant source, provided that it contains the three species of interest (N, C and S). The influence of calcination temperature and initial thiourea content on the inclusion of dopants and photocatalytic activity was investigated. A red-shift in the absorption spectra was observed for the obtained catalysts. It was probed by XPS the presence of the three dopants not only on the surface of the catalyst but also in the bulk of the matrix. All the catalysts showed activity for NO degradation under visible and ultraviolet light. NO2 was formed as an undesirable intermediate and was not totally mineralized during the photocatalytic oxidation. Nitrogen as dopant appeared to be crucial factor to obtain visible light activity. |
