Abstrakt: In order to test the hypothesis that perceived similarity to parents is a function of one's responsivity to social reinforcement, 31 male college students were given the Role Construct Repertory Test and a verbal conditioning procedure. The results demonstrated a negative relationship. Although there were no differences in conditionability between Ss low and high in perceived similarity to father or between Ss low and high in perceived similarity to mother, when the scores for perceived similarity to the mother and the father were combined, the negative relationship was clear-cut (p< .01). The theoretical implications were discussed.
