Abstrakt: Although the number of ‘psychopathic disorder’ patients admitted to special hospitals has declined over the last decade, a small number of such offenders continues to be admitted from the courts under hospital orders. One ward in Broadmoor hospital which admits young male patients in this category is described. An approach which integrates psychodynamic, behavioural and cognitive principles, and which attempts to understand patients' personality difficulties and offences in terms of their emotional and cognitive development, is adopted as a useful framework for formulating treatment needs and objectives. Within the ward setting a variety of psychological treatments are offered. However, the social environment within the hospital limits opportunities for realistic assessment and rehabilitation.
