An asymptotic solution to the membrane equations for shells of revolution of negative Gaussian curvature

Abstrakt: This paper examines the membrane theory of the equilibrium of an elastic shell of revolution of negative Gaussian curvature, with a free edge and subject to a normal loading Pn(γ) cos nθ, where θ is the meridional angle, γ is an angular parameter along meridian lines and nis an integer. The asymptotic dependence upon n, as n→ ∞, of the stress resultants at a fixed point of the shell is determined analytically to provide a basis of comparison with the full bending theory. The particular case of the single sheet hyperboloid is examined in detail.
