For this issue of my standards column, Keith Armstrong has prepared an article on a subject many of you are not familiar. It is called risk management where the risk of a product falling out of is operational specification over its lifetime is a significant issue. You can imagine the scenario where a product is designed and has initial tests performed to see if it meets the manufacturer's specifications to be sold in the first place. But what might happen five years later? Just in the past month, I was presented with the situation of the need to have a filter in a power line to control conducted emissions. That sounded quite reasonable at the time until the proposer indicated that most filters that were being considered only have a life time of about 15 years and then all would have to be replaced. Imagine the cost of recalling all the product to replace a filter! To find a way to keep the product operational with adequate EMC introduced is part of risk management. So I invite you to read on as Keith provides an excellent story on the subject. |
