Abstrakt: The responses people have when diagnosed with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are directly related to their opinions about the virus. These opinions are generated through participation in a variety of different contexts involving HIV. There are many contexts in which HIV is viewed as separating people from all they hold dear. As this line of thinking is extended, people who are diagnosed HIV+ tend to view the virus as something from which they want to be separate. The relational metaphor discussed in this paper explores the nature of how experiences of separation and connection develop in relationship. The therapist views clients’ stories of their lives with HIV from a relational perspective. Two case examples illustrate how the therapist works to balance ideas of separation from HIV with ideas of connection to HIV.
