Photo ablative laser therapy for advanced gastrointestinal malignancy has seen increasing use as a palliative mode of treatment. The Nd:YAG laser has demonstrated repeatedly its efficacy in relieving obstruction and hemorrhage throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Preresectional laser recanalization for obstructing carcinoma has obviated the need for operative diversion and staged resection. A new technique for endoscopic palliation is photodynamic therapy, which has shown promise for the treatment of advanced and, in certain instances, early gastrointestinal malignancies. |
