Abstrakt: Flexible fiberoptic endoscopy of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract is discussed from the viewpoint of screening and surveillance of asymptomatic individuals to permit earlier detection and treatment of carcinomas. Mass endoscopic screening of asymptomatic adults is unlikely to be time- and cost-effective, even for relatively prevalent tumors such as colorectal carcinoma. Endoscopic surveillance does have a role in conditions known to increase the risk of colorectal carcinoma and may be of value in conditions associated with upper gastrointestinal malignancies.
