Abstrakt: The understanding of water and solute transport in the gastrointestinal tract has led to the development of oral solutions to treat dehydration resulting from severe diarrheal diseases. Rehydration with oral electrolyte solutions is a safe, less expensive, and effective therapy in both developed and developing nations. It is hoped that familiarity with the use and basis of this therapy will lead to its increased utilization.
