The child with cancer may experience pain of several causes: pain caused directly by the malignancy, treatment-related pain, procedural pain, and pain from an unrelated medical condition. Cancer-related pain most often arises from invasion of bone or bone marrow; however, invasion of the nervous system or other soft tissues also may result in pain. When definitive anticancer treatment is ineffective or unavailable, the correct use of analgesic drugs forms the mainstay of treatment for pain. Other modalities, including anesthetic and neurosurgical interventions and noninvasive techniques, also may be helpful. |
