Although antibiotics have virtually eliminated the mortality associated with bone and joint sepsis, the morbidity continues becuase of delay in diagnosis and inadequate treatment. The diagnosis needs an organized approach that ends when all reasonable attempts to isolate the organism have been made. Treatment requires a two-pronged attack: the correct antibiotics to kill the bacteria, and surgery to débride the material that causes the inflammatory response. |
