Success in working with adolescents depends largely upon the interest, sensitivity, and personality of the physician, and his willingness to invest time and effort in developing the skills and techniques necessary for effective communication. Interviewing is discussed, with attention to special problems such as the uncommunicative or depressed adolescent. Family, school, and peer group relationships should all be considered when eliciting the history. The importance of evaluating the physical findings in terms of the teenager's psychophysiologic development is stressed. |
