Uterine uptake of alpha amino nitrogen was estimated in 12 intact and 5 oophorectomized nonpregnant Dorset ewes before and after treatment with estrogen and/or progesterone. In the intact animals, the administration of either hormone enhanced the uterine uptake of alpha amino nitrogen; however, the differences were not statistically significant. In the oophorectomized ewes estrogen alone failed to enhance the uptake of alpha amino nitrogen by the uterus and the administration of both hormones resulted in the highest uptakes. It appears that the effect of estrogen and progesterone on the uptake of amino acids by the nonpregnant uterus is independent of the changes in uterine blood flow that were seen. |
