Simultaneous recordings of intervillous space pressure and amniotic fluid pressure were performed in order to clarify the conflicting reports now available. Twenty-one women with live fetuses and intact membranes at term were studied during prelabor or in early first stage. In 15 patients, with placentas located on the anterior uterine wall radiologic examination, two intervillous space pressures, the amniotic fluid pressure, and maternal arterial blood pressure were simultaneously recorded. In the other 6 patients, with placentas not visualized on the anterior uterine wall, two simultaneous amniotic fluid pressures were recorded. The over-all patterns of variation of both intervillous space pressures and amniotic fluid pressure tracings were similar in spite of maternal arterial blood pressure variations, which strongly suggests that only variations in pressure caused by uterine contractility are being measured in all cases. Only slight differences could be found in the magnitude of the intervillous space pressure and amniotic fluid pressure and these were not different from those found between two amniotic fluid pressures. |
