The relief of the pains of labor by the continuous intravenous drip of meperidine and scopolamine

Abstrakt: 1.1. One hundred twenty-one patients in labor were given dilute solutions of meperidine and scopolamine by a continuous intravenous drip.2.2. There were 44 nulliparas and 77 multiparas in this series.3.3. The patients were unselected and included cases of twins, breech presentations, toxemias of pregnancy, rheumatic heart disease, and Rh-negative mothers.4.4. Synergism of meperidine and scopolamine was demonstrated.5.5. A high percentage of analgesia and total amnesia was obtained.6.6. The active stage of labor was appreciably shortened.7.7. Fetal complications were not increased.8.8. Except for a postpartum hemorrhage in a patient who had a succenturiate placental lobe, there were no postpartum maternal complications.9.9. There were no maternal deaths and no morbidity.
