Abstrakt: We noticed a discrepancy between Na measured by direct ISE and flame photometry in a patient with low protein levels and decided to check if this was a general phenomenon. Sodium levels were measured by flame photometry and direct potentiometry (DISE) in 365 plasma specimens, over a 5 month period. Most of these samples were from the Intensive Care Unit or Open Heart Surgery Unit at St.Vincent’s Hospital. The differences between the two techniques were up to ±9 mmol/L (± 5.5%). There was a linear correlation between total protein levels and these differences in sodium, the relation being given by the equation y = 13.9 - 0.20X [y:Na(Flame - DISE)(mmol/L), X:proteins (g/L)]
