The level of alanine-aminotransferase (ALAT) has been recccimended as a “surrogate” test for preventing the transmission of NANB hepatitis. The validity of this test has been challenged by the fact that not all blood donors with increased values of ALAT transmit hepatitis and, conversely, NANB hepatitis can be transmitted even when levels of ALAT are within the normal range. |
