Abstrakt: This paper describes a project which examined the effects of significant adults on the lives of prominent individuals and imprisoned people. Prominent figures in government, the media, literature, the arts, sports, and education were asked to respond to questions about significant experiences during their developmental years and togive advice to those who influence children. Responses were also solicited from imprisoned persons through wardens and state superintendents of penal institutions. In some cases, personal interviews of prisoners were conducted. Some recurrent themes of respondents were identified with interesting differences between the prominent people and the imprisoned population. The implications for teacher preparation are discussed.
