Abstrakt: Inflammation of the umbilical cord occurred frequently even where syphilis was satisfactorily ruled out and is, therefore, of no value in the diagnosis of fetal syphilis. It did not occur with treated syphilis. Both ends of the cord were usually affected, but the intensity of the changes had a tendency to be greater at the placental end and in the vein. In the majority of instances there was evidence which pointed to bacterial infection. The prognosis for the child was not affected by the presence of inflammation of the umbilical cord.
