Abstrakt: The densities of the occupied and empty states of graphite have been studied by XPS and BIS. The spectra of the π states in the σ gap are completely asymmetric on each side of EF, in glaring contradiction with the predictions of all band-calculations. It is shown that this observation must be attributed to interference effects in the matrix elements due to the presence of more than one atom in the primitive cell.
