It was found through X-rays diffraction pattern analyses that the crystalline structure of polypropylene changed from a monoclinic into a pseudohexagonal by milling. This crystal transformation was reversibly restored to the stable monoclinic structure by heat treatments of the fractured polypropylene. Decreases in both crystallite size and crystallinity were observed after the fracture and these decreases were found to be irreversible. The mobile fractions determined by the measurements of spin–spin relaxation times of the proton NMR were consistently interpreted with the conclusions determined by the X-ray analyses. Similar phenomena were also found on high-density polyethylene. |
