The need for a comprehensive psychosocial support framework for patients living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) was recognised by a multidisciplinary team working in a tertiary referral teaching hospital. The team developed a three-tiered structure of psychosocial support for patients with IBD: a half-day IBD workshop for patients and their families, 6-week Chronic Disease Self-Management Programme (CDSMP), and bimonthly IBD patient support group. Following overwhelmingly positive feedback from the half-day workshop, with patients requesting a more in-depth programme, the CDSMP was offered to participants because it is an internationally recognised model of psychosocial intervention for chronic disease. A pilot study of the CDSMP for IBD patients was undertaken with a waitlist control group. CDSMP participants had reduced levels of anxiety and improved levels of health-related quality of life variables at follow-up when compared to the waitlist controls. A bimonthly patient-led support group developed from the CDSMP. |
