•We determined the MRSA frequency and clonal types in slaughter pigs in Japan.•Five of the isolates were classified as ST97/spat1236/SCCmecV.•Three isolates were classified as ST5/spat002/atypical SCCmectype.•The five ST97 MRSA isolates were clindamycin-resistant/erythromycin-susceptible.•MRSA prevalence has increased owing to the newly identified ST97 and ST5 strains. |
