Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a potentially debilitating psychiatric illness characterized by intense preoccupation with an imagined or slight defect in physical appearance. Until recently, it has gone largely unrecognized and did not appear in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disordersuntil 1987. Improved methods of assessment and treatment of BDD have increased interest in this disorder. This article reviews current literature on BDD, including the similarities between BDD and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), current assessment and treatment strategies, and implications for clinical practice and future research. |
