The fine structure in the podocytes of the antennal gland of Neocaridina denticulata was examined for the metabolism of injected trypan blue under light microscopy and electron microscopy. Each shrimp was injected with 0.05 ml of 0.5% trypan blue solution at the first or second abdominal segment. The accumulation of the stain started within 1 h after injection. The stain was observed in the small cytoplasmic vesicles of the podocytes. Many pinocytotic vesicles were also observed in the lateral cell membrane. Small cytoplasmic vesicles and coated vesicles were fused to tubular structures. The vesicles containing the stain seemed to be secreted into the urinary space from the apical portion of the podocytes. These results suggest that some small toxic substances such as trypan blue, having once passed through the slit membrane, are absorbed from the basal or lateral cell membrane and are detoxified in the podocyte cytoplasm. The metabolized stain is secreted from the podocyte into the urine. These dynamic elimination mechanisms show a marked difference from the podocytes of the mammalian glomerulus. |
