The construction industry presents some unique challenges and opportunities for Total Quality Management (TQM). During 1992, the writers conducted research focused on the applicability of Total Quality Management to the construction industry and opportunities for implementation within a mediumsize generalcontracting constructionmanagement firm. This paper discusses the challenge of applying TQM within the current construction paradigm, barriers to needed change, and opportunities available to those who are willing to lead. The paper is not a prescription for applying TQM; instead, its purpose is to serve as a catalyst to promote discussion of realworld problems and realities. It does so by taking a practical view of current and future operations to which all constructors should be able to relate. The seven primary elements of TQM are analyzed based on current practice and the opportunities created by redefining “product” and “success” to form a new paradigm of value as it relates to construction. |
