The fundamentals of pressure cycle analysis and its application as a forecasting system for engineering management planning are presented. Pressure cycle analysis can increase the engineering manager's understanding of whole industries, markets, products, prices, and costs. Several interrelated aspects of pressure cycles as a tool for engineering managers, including forecasting, are reviewed. Forecasting deals with the anticipation of economic change in order to improve the organization's ability to plan, organize, and control the efficient allocation of resources. Pressure cycle analysis isolates the kind of economic growth and change that has a direct influence on the productivity of engineering organizations. Both the theoretical and the computational background is presented followed by a case study application of the technique within an engineeringconsulting company. The four distinct phases of pressure cycle analysis are developed showing a set of distinct characteristics out of which should flow a number of engineering management decisions that represent action rather than mere reaction to economic growth and change. |
