Abstrakt: Using monoclonal antibodies, we have examined immunohistochemically the expression of HLA‐heavy chain, beta‐2 microglobulin and HLA‐DR antigen in benign and malignant melanocytic tumors. In malignant melanoma, these antigens were expressed on the cell membrane, but, in pigmented and blue nevi, these antigens were decreased or absent. In particular, the expression of HLA‐DR was restricted to the cell membrane of some malignant melanomas, so its expression on a melanocytic cell lineage might be a useful diagnostic marker. Furthermore, we studied the degree of lymphocytic infiltration into melanotic tumors, using the expression of HLA antigens as the marker. Our results did not indicate any significant relationship between HLA‐DR positive melanoma and lymphocyte infiltration.
