A biological control program against a foreign pest of cereal crops, Oulema melanopus (L.), was initiated in 1966 by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. One phase of this program was a survey for existing natural enemies that may have become adapted to this new pest. In 1967 a Trichogramma species emerged from field-collected eggs of O. melanopus in Berrien County, Michigan. Subsequently, parasitized eggs and adult parasites were collected in 2 additional counties. The Trichogramma first was identified as T. evanescens West wood. However, results of crossing tests and developmental time studies show that it is not this species. Consideration is being given to improvement of acceptance of O. melanopus as a host by selective breeding of the parasite. |
