Abstrakt: A proposed modification of the standard ethylene dibromide (EDB) fumigation quarantine system for Hawaii-grown papayas omits hydrocooling the fruit after hot-water treatment and permits fumigation at a fruit temperature of 33°C or above. The effective dose of EDB is reduced from 8 g/m3 to 4 g/m3, with concomitant reductions of EDB residue in the fruit.
