Abstrakt: A potent sex attractant has been isolated from Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller). The attractant’s structure is consistent with that of an acetate of a doubly unsaturated C15 alcohol from the results of chemical tests, gas chromatographic retention indices, and mass spectrometry. Several of the isomers of 7-tridecen-1-ol acetate, and 7,9-,7,10-, 7,11-, and 7,12-tridecadien-1-ol acetate were synthesized and tested for biological activity in the field. A mixture of 7,11-tridecadien-1-ol acetates enriched in the cis, cis-isomer was found to be a potent and specific attractant for male potato tuberworm moths, at levels as small as 10 μg/trap.
