Abstrakt: Twenty traps, 10 baited with 25 sexually mature normal males and 10 traps with sexually mature, sterilized males of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), recaptured 36% of a total of 4,460 sexually mature virgin females released in a fruit-producing area of Hawaii devoid of wild flies when the traps were 45 to 335 m from the release site. Males treated as pupae with gamma irradiation and used as bait lost their attraction more rapidly than normal males. Traps baited with 25 normal males attracted ca. 15, 6.4, and 1.4 times as many females as did traps baited with 1,5, or 25 sterile males, respectively; trimedlure (8 ml) was about as attractive to females as was one male.
