Cocoon Construction by Bathyplectes curculionis and Attack by Secondary Parasites

Abstrakt: Cocoons of B. curculionis (Thomson) are composed of a loosely woven outer layer, a tight middle layer, and a thin, transparent inner lining. Middle-cocoon filaments which offer some protection to the naked larva were in place about 1 hour after emergence from the host. Nondiapausing larvae required 24–30 hours to complete their cocoons, whereas diapausing larvae required 32–42 hours. Sceptrothelys grandiclava (Walker) is a gregarious secondary parasite that attacks B. curculionis cocoons only after the innermost layer is formed. Mesoehorus agilis Cresson is an indirect secondary parasite that oviposits in larvae of the alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal), after they have been exposed to female B. curculionis.
