The painted leafhopper, Endria inimica (Say), a vector of wheat striate mosaic virus, is a bivoltine insect that overwinters in nature as 2nd generation eggs in diapause. In the laboratory, egg diapause occurred when females were reared under short day lengths (12L:12D); diapause was averted by rearing females under long days (15L:9D). Eggs in diapause were not induced to develop by exposing them to the light and temperature conditions favorable to continuous development, but developed only after chilling. Diapause was terminated more rapidly by chilling the eggs at 0° than to 8°C. |
