Abstrakt: The assessment of the biomechanical state of the intracranial system in vivo is an important problem in neurology. We are measuring the transcranial propagation time of an acoustic pulse to record the dynamics of the biomechanical properties of brain parenchyma. The computerized system constructed for this purpose is permitting propagation time measurements with a relative uncertainty of 10−5to 10−6. The signal fluctuations associated with heart pulses and breathing, the patterns of some pathological states and the Fourier spectrum of the periodic fluctuations correspond to those of the intracranial pressure, measured by indirect methods. These data prove the possibility of evaluating an acoustic method for the diagnostics of biomechanical states of brain parenchyma, the acoustic encephalography.
