Abstrakt: AbstractEarlier studies with chloramphenicol and ampicillin in vitro have shown that they can eliminate Bordetella pertussis. A comparison between a series of 72 children on chloramphenicol and a series of 76 on ampicillin (6 days treatment) showed that a larger percentage on chloramphenicol than on ampicillin became free from bacteria during a period of 2 weeks after the end of therapy. Secondary infections were common from the onset of the disease. Bordetella pertussis alone was found in only one-quarter of the children. In about 75 of the cases the secondary infections were eliminated in both series. The frequency of coughing attacks was reduced more in the chloramphenicol than in the ampicillin cases. The side-effects consisted chiefly of diarrhoea. The frequency of diarrhoea was greatest in infants and the diarrhoea rather more violent in the ampicillin cases. Exanthema occurred in 4 cases on ampicillin and in 1 on chloramphenicol.
