Because the conventional circular beam used in dental radiography irradiates more tissue per exposure than necessary, instruments and techniques for use with a rectangular beam have been developed. Use of the rectangular beam, which is s lightly larger than the X-ray film, can reduce the amount of tissue being irradiated by up to 58%. Positioning instruments ensure positive alignment of the X-ray beam and the film. Radiographs made with the technique have greater clarity, improved contrast, and better tissue differentiation than those taken with the circular beam. |
