Abstrakt: Quenching markedly increases the electrical conductivity of yttria-stabilized zirconia. Essential parameters are the quenching rate and the final quenching temperature. Higher bulk and grain boundary conductivities are observed with faster quenching rate. The final quenching temperature also has a significant influence. The quenching effect vanishes rapidly at 760°C. Below this transition temperature, aging is observed with both quenched and naturally cooled samples, but quenched zirconia keeps higher electrical conductivity than the conventional material.
